Interactions of Fenoxaprop-ethyl with Fenchlorazole-ethyl in Annual Grasses

In growth room studies, POST applications of fenoxaprop-ethyl at 50 g ai ha−1 at the four- to five-leaf stage of development were non-toxic to barnyardgrass, large crabgrass, and yellow foxtail. POST applications of fenchlorazole-ethyl at 12.5 or 25.0 g ai ha−1 were also nontoxic to these same three species. However, when the two chemicals were applied in combination at the above rates they were toxic to all three species, indicating a synergistic interaction in all three species. In additional studies, a sensitive biotype of wild oat was severely injured by fenoxaprop-ethyl at 50 g ai ha−1 and a resistant biotype of wild oat was only slightly injured by fenoxaprop-ethyl at rates as high as 800 g ai ha−1. However, no significant interactions were observed between fenoxaprop-ethyl and fenchlorazole-ethyl in either of these wild oat biotypes.
Fish oil supplemented for 9 months does not improve glycaemic control or insulin sensitivity in subjects with impaired glucose regulation: a parallel randomised controlled trial

The effects of fish oil (FO) supplementation on glycaemic control are unclear, and positive effects may occur only when the phospholipid content of tissue membranes exceeds 14 % as n-3 PUFA. Subjects (n 36, thirty-three completed) were paired based on metabolic parameters and allocated into a parallel double-blind randomised trial with one of each pair offered daily either 6 g of FO (3·9 g n-3 PUFA) or 6 g of maize oil (MO) for 9 months. Hyperinsulinaemic–euglycaemic–euaminoacidaemic (HIEGEAA) clamps (with [6,6 2H2 glucose]) were performed at the start and end of the intervention. Endogenous glucose production (EGP) and whole-body protein turnover (WBPT) were each measured after an overnight fast. The primary outcome involved the effect of oil type on insulin sensitivity related to glycaemic control. The secondary outcome involved the effect of oil type on WBPT. Subjects on FO (n 16) had increased erythrocyte n-3 PUFA concentrations >14 %, whereas subjects on MO (n 17) had unaltered n-3 PUFA concentrations at 9 %. Type of oil had no effect on fasting EGP, insulin sensitivity or total glucose disposal during the HIEGEAA clamp. In contrast, under insulin-stimulated conditions, total protein disposal (P=0·007) and endogenous WBPT (P=0·001) were both increased with FO. In an associated pilot study (n 4, three completed), although n-3 PUFA in erythrocyte membranes increased to >14 % with the FO supplement, the enrichment in muscle membranes remained lower (8 %; P<0·001). In conclusion, long-term supplementation with FO, at amounts near the safety limits set by regulatory authorities in Europe and the USA, did not alter glycaemic control but did have an impact on WBPT.

The Russian string quartet has a considerably longer history than the Russian symphony; Alyabiev wrote his first string quartet in 1815, to say nothing of the three quartets by a certain Taneev—possibly an ancestor of one or both of the two late-nineteenth-century Taneevs—published by Breitkopf at the end of the eighteenth century, of which the last traceable copies seem to have been destroyed in the Dresden holocaust of 1945. Yet the quartet has never achieved the importance in Russian music that it enjoys in other countries; numerically there are plenty of quartets but they are the stepchildren of Russian music. The Balakirev circle was in its early days actively hostile to chamber music, though Borodin eventually conquered his friends by his two fine compositions. Tchaikovsky's three are not as bad as seems to be commonly supposed but they can hardly be reckoned among his masterpieces, and the world would be little poorer if it were for ever deprived of the quartets of Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov. The only nineteenth-century Russians who took the quartet seriously enough to write a whole series of them were Glazunov and S.I. Taneev (whose unrelated or only distantly related namesake, A. S. Taneev, also produced three respectably written but very lightweight quartets), and their only twentieth-century successors have been Myaskovsky and Shostakovich.

The subject of the present paper suggested itself to me while I was working on two very different subjects: Czech and Polish church-music in the sixteenth century, and the solo art-song in the Slavonic countries generally. It has nothing to do with the Iron Curtain and its effect on the world of music today. There is a much older curtain between Slavonic music and the Western world, which I should like to pull aside a little: a curtain woven by the group of languages spoken and written by the Slav peoples. It is true that a certain number of vocal works—mostly Russian operas of the period 1870–1910—have thrust their way through by sheer force of genius and we have learned to enjoy Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin and Tchaikovsky, in more or less unsatisfactory English or French translations, or even in Russian. (Sometimes, at Covent Garden, in three languages simultaneously. But operatic audiences are accustomed to enjoying opera in languages they don't really understand.) But not more than three Czech operas have made any real impact on Western Europe and not a single Polish one; even Russian opera is known only by a handful of works. In the field of solo song the position is much worse. We know Mussorgsky was a great song-composer but we know that mainly because of intensive propaganda rather than from direct experience; it can hardly be otherwise so long as Western singers fight shy of Russian; we should still know Hugo Wolf by hearsay rather than by hearing if we had to rely on translations. Russian is at least as musical a language as German, and as subtle, and the best Russian song-composers—not only Mussorgsky—write vocal lines that reflect and intensify the sense of the words, that are moulded to a certain arrangement of vowels and consonants, like good song-composers in any other language. All this, the great corpus of Russian song, remains almost unknown—or known by its least fine and subtle examples. And not only Russian song; Poland has produced at least two remarkable song-writers, Moniuszko in the last century and Szymanowski in the present one, of whom Szymanowski is known only in German translations and Moniuszko not at all, for his songs have never been translated into English and the wretched French selection is a hundred years old.

If I utter the sentence: Hitler caused the outbreak of the second world war, some interested logician may translate my sentence into the words: Hitler necessitated the outbreak of the second world war, If that translation be made I do not accept it, unless the dragoman makes it clear to me that by the word “necessitate” he means nothing more than I mean by the word “cause.” In which case I can dispense with his services. But if he is embodying in his translation the thought that the outbreak of war followed from the existence of Hitler at a given moment of time, as the equality of the angles in a triangle follows from the equality of the sides (I assume that that follows), then I repudiate his translation, because I do not agree that a statement or proposition such as event x caused event y is a hypothetical proposition of the type if x then y. A fortiori it cannot be regarded by me as a reciprocal hypothetical proposition: if x then y if y then x; nor, to complete the possibilities, can I infer what I call the cause from the effect.

Musicologists are sometimes reproached for being interested only in the music that lies outside the normal répertoire. Against the reproach they have numerous sound lines of defence: that the ‘normal répertoire’ covers a relatively small range, that their work helps materially to widen that range, and so on. All the same, there is (I think) a general and quite natural tendency on the part of scholars to neglect the very familiar composers, to assume that we already know all that is worth knowing about the music of, for instance, Schumann and Mendelssohn and Chopin, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky. There may, they feel, still be some gleaning to do but the main harvest has already been gathered in. It is perhaps a natural assumption but it is a quite false assumption.
